From stalled project to working underwriting platform
A specialty insurance platform had not shipped in three years. The old system was replaced in 12 weeks. From first line of code to a working production platform took about five months.
The problem
Commercial submissions arrive as broker emails carrying inconsistent forms, schedules, loss runs and scanned supplements. Operations teams can spend hours re-keying a submission before underwriting starts.
The client needed each email turned into a complete, verified submission in minutes — with addresses checked, risks scored and sources recorded. The existing code could not be extended reliably, and three years of work had not produced a system the team could use.
What was built
A working underwriting system that turns a broker email into a complete, auditable submission:
Document analysis with evidence
Forms, schedules and loss records are classified and the data extracted. Every value is linked to its source document, page and exact text. Unverified guesses are not accepted.
A complete underwriting interface
108 screens cover triage, risk summaries, quoting, endorsements, conditions, diary, notes, billing and a package for brokers.
Integrations and multiple clients
The system connects to Applied Epic. Each managing general agent or wholesaler has its own products, rules, panels, branding and workflow.
How two people delivered it
The team was one experienced engineer and one product owner. AI tools were used to speed up development, but an experienced engineer made every technical decision and reviewed every piece of work.
- Automated checks: type checking, code quality rules, import boundaries, database migration safety and tests all run automatically before any change is accepted.
- Traceable results: every extracted fact must link to the exact text in a named source document.
- Experienced review: an engineer with 20 years' experience owns every technical decision and reviews every piece of work before it goes live.
- No lock-in: built with standard, widely used tools (Django, React, PostgreSQL, Terraform). The client owns the code and infrastructure.
The outcome
Managing general agents can process broker emails from start to finish. Work that previously took hours of manual re-entry now completes in minutes, with source references kept for audit purposes.
The client owns the application, infrastructure, documentation and all supporting tools. The system has since handled a $1bn property submission.
